DJ Mag Top 100
Why the DJ Mag Top 100 Barely Changes
Five DJs have been in the top ten of every poll since 2015. This looks at the table, the vote, the rules and the DJs it leaves out.
The same names, eleven years running.
That is a long time for a list decided by public vote to hold still. This piece looks at the table, at how the vote works, at what the rules allow, and at who gets left out. The open question is whether the poll measures who the best DJs are or who has the biggest crowd to call on. The evidence can't fully settle it, and I'll say where it stops.
Eleven years, five names.
Here are the top ten from each poll, from DJ Mag's own year pages.
| Year | 1–5 | 6–10 |
|---|---|---|
| 2015 | Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Hardwell, Garrix, Armin van Buuren, Tiësto | Guetta, Avicii, Afrojack, Skrillex, Steve Aoki |
| 2016 | Garrix, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Hardwell, Armin van Buuren, Tiësto | Guetta, Aoki, Oliver Heldens, Skrillex, Afrojack |
| 2017 | Garrix, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Armin van Buuren, Hardwell, Tiësto | The Chainsmokers, Guetta, Afrojack, Aoki, Marshmello |
| 2018 | Garrix, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Hardwell, Armin van Buuren, Guetta | Tiësto, Don Diablo, Afrojack, Heldens, Marshmello |
| 2019 | Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Garrix, Guetta, Armin van Buuren, Marshmello | Don Diablo, Heldens, Tiësto, Afrojack, Aoki |
| 2020 | Guetta, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Garrix, Armin van Buuren, Alok | Don Diablo, Afrojack, Heldens, Aoki, Timmy Trumpet |
| 2021 | Guetta, Garrix, Armin van Buuren, Alok, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike | Afrojack, Don Diablo, Heldens, Timmy Trumpet, Aoki |
| 2022 | Garrix, Guetta, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Alok, Armin van Buuren | Afrojack, Aoki, Timmy Trumpet, Don Diablo, Heldens |
| 2023 | Guetta, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Garrix, Alok, Armin van Buuren | Timmy Trumpet, Afrojack, Aoki, Peggy Gou, Vintage Culture |
| 2024 | Garrix, Guetta, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Alok, Timmy Trumpet | Armin van Buuren, Afrojack, FISHER, Vintage Culture, Peggy Gou |
| 2025 | Guetta, Garrix, Alok, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Armin van Buuren | Timmy Trumpet, FISHER, Afrojack, Charlotte de Witte, Anyma |
Read down the columns and the same few names keep coming back. Steve Aoki was in the top ten in eight of the eleven years. Oliver Heldens and Don Diablo spent most of the late 2010s and early 2020s in the lower half. Tiësto, a three-time winner in the early 2000s, left the top ten after 2019 and was 21st in 2025. Hardwell went from second in 2015 to 15th.
The top of the list has moved, but slowly, and mostly by one name at a time. Alok came into the top five in 2020 and has stayed. Timmy Trumpet reached the top ten the same year. In 2025 Charlotte de Witte and Anyma each climbed seven places into it.
Guetta and Garrix, and the year it was someone else
Garrix won in 2016, 2017 and 2018, then again in 2022 and 2024. Guetta won in 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2025, and had already won once in 2011. His 2025 title was his fifth, which puts him level with Garrix and with Armin van Buuren, who won in 2007 to 2010 and again in 2012. In 2019, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike took first place for the second time. That is the only gap in the Guetta and Garrix run since 2016.
How the DJ Mag Top 100 vote works.
The poll began in 1993 as a list chosen by the magazine's editors for its hundredth issue. It became a public vote in 1997 (Wikipedia's article on the poll and EDMTunes both give 1997). The 2026 edition is its 33rd year, and DJ Mag calls it the world's largest publicly voted music poll.
There are no nominations and no eligibility criteria. A voter names five DJs of their choosing. Each person gets one vote, and DJ Mag says it validates every vote to block fraudulent or artificial ones. In 2026 voting ran from 8 July to 16 September. There is a separate link for voters in China.
Two things DJ Mag does not publish, in anything I could find: how the five picks are weighted into a ranking, and how many votes any DJ received. The magazine reported record turnout in 2025, with voters from 231 countries, but gave no total. So a reader can see the order and nothing about the margins. Any claim about how close the top three were is a guess.
Campaigning is allowed.
DJ Mag lets artists, agents and fans ask people to vote, and it supplies a logo pack for campaigns. What it bans is inducement, canvassing in random public places and manipulation of the vote.
| Allowed | Not allowed |
|---|---|
| Artists, agents and fans asking people to vote | Free drinks, tickets, competition entries, exclusive content, merchandise or discounts in exchange for a vote |
| A logo pack from DJ Mag for campaigns | PR teams canvassing in random public places such as streets, schools, colleges, shopping centres or sporting events |
| Canvassing at an event where the artist is playing, aimed at that artist's own fans, registered with DJ Mag in advance | Event canvassing that was not registered in advance, whose votes are thrown out |
| Manipulating the vote: DJ Mag can ban anyone it believes is doing so |
The rules treat a DJ's ability to mobilise an audience as a fair part of the contest. A DJ with a large, loyal following and a team that knows how to ask has an advantage the rules openly permit. A DJ who plays to rooms of a few hundred people and has nobody organising a vote does not.
The criticisms on record.
The poll has been criticised for as long as it has been public, and the criticisms repeat.
| Date | Who | What they said |
|---|---|---|
| October 2010 | Ben Child, The Guardian | Pointed to "the paucity of artists from outside the house and trance scenes in the top 100". |
| July 2013 | Kevin Yu, HuffPost | The list reflects "the amount of money they can put towards marketing" more than skill. |
| December 2017 | Laidback Luke, on Twitter (reported by EDMTunes) | The poll had "grown to be a monster", with DJs who throw money at DJ Mag and others who hacked the system. |
| October 2019 | Martin Garrix, in a Dutch interview (reported by EDMTunes) | "I really don't care, the so-called world ranking." He had been number one for three years and said he is not a better DJ than Tiësto. |
| September 2021 | EDM.com | Reported a Reddit campaign to vote the fake DJ Thicc Booty McSpin Daddy up the poll. |
None of this proves the poll is fixed. People inside and outside dance music have been saying the same thing for more than a decade: the vote tracks marketing and reach.
Who is famous, and who the poll misses.
Search for famous DJs and the first result is the poll. After it come the lists that borrow from it. Rave Bonfire's electronic music DJs page opens with Garrix, Tiësto, Guetta, Calvin Harris, Armin van Buuren and Hardwell. The ranking on thedjlist.com, which is built differently, has Guetta first but then Marshmello, DJ Snake and The Chainsmokers, and puts Garrix 16th.
A different kind of list sits next to them. The dBs Insider "25 greatest DJs of all time" names Carl Cox, Tiësto, Eric Prydz, Peggy Gou, Honey Dijon, DJ Premier, The Blessed Madonna, Amelie Lens, Alison Wonderland, Andy C, Frankie Knuckles, Avicii, Daft Punk, Nia Archives, Skream, Charlotte de Witte, Grandmaster Flash, Calvin Harris, Goldie, Sammy Virji, Fred again.., Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, Annie Mac and Fatboy Slim. It overlaps with the DJ Mag top ten in two names, Guetta and de Witte, and more broadly with the top 21 in a few more. Frankie Knuckles, Andy C, Goldie and Skream are not in the DJ Mag top 21 at all.
Sasha and John Digweed, who were number one in the poll in 2000 and 2001, are on none of the four lists I read.
Famous house DJs
Within house and its neighbours, the 2025 poll crowned FISHER as its number one house DJ and ranked Black Coffee 17th. Keinemusik, the Berlin collective, came 20th. Vintage Culture (11th) and Peggy Gou (12th) had both been in the top ten the year before.
Black Coffee is one of the DJs DJ Mag says rose with an Ibiza residency. This is Boiler Room's 62-minute South Africa set from 2015.
Women in the list
Charlotte de Witte, at ninth in 2025, is the highest-placed woman in the DJ Mag top ten that year, and DJ Mag named her its number one techno DJ. Peggy Gou was twelfth. Sara Landry was named number one hard DJ. The dBs list adds Honey Dijon, The Blessed Madonna, Amelie Lens, Alison Wonderland, Nia Archives and Annie Mac.
DJ Mag filmed de Witte's 63-minute techno set at the Castelo de S. Jorge in Lisbon in 2022.
Where the list does move.
The top five barely shifts, but the genre crowns show where change happens. In 2025 DJ Mag named Armin van Buuren its number one trance DJ, FISHER number one for house, Charlotte de Witte for techno and Sara Landry for hard, with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike the number one DJ group.
DJ Mag's own analysis points to two moves. One is a hard techno influx, while hardstyle acts such as Angerfist and Brennan Heart dropped out of the hundred. The other is Ibiza. DJ Mag notes that a residency there helps a ranking, and says Calvin Harris, Black Coffee, Carl Cox, Jamie Jones and Claptone all rose. The highest new entry was Michael Bibi at 48, and the biggest climber was Solomun, up 33 places to 55.
DJ Mag's channel has Solomun's 55-minute set from Destino Ibiza, filmed in 2016.
The first famous DJs.
The poll tells an electronic dance music story, but the first famous DJs came from a different tradition. Wikipedia's account of the DJ puts mixing at the start of hip-hop in the 1970s and names Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa and Grand Wizzard Theodore (Wikipedia's Disc jockey article; it credits Grand Wizzard Theodore with the scratch). The poll's own early winners are in the table.
| Year | Number one |
|---|---|
| 1997 | Carl Cox |
| 1998 and 1999 | Paul Oakenfold |
| 2000 | Sasha |
| 2001 | John Digweed |
| 2002 to 2004 | Tiësto |
| 2005 and 2006 | Paul van Dyk |
| 2007 to 2010 | Armin van Buuren |
| 2011 | David Guetta |
| 2012 | Armin van Buuren |
| 2013 and 2014 | Hardwell |
Carl Cox won the first public vote in 1997. He has 28 sets in the Selector, and this is his 133-minute Cercle film from the Château de Chambord in France, made in 2018.
So why the same names?
The evidence supports a narrower answer than the question asks.
First, the voting is open. There is no panel and no shortlist, so the DJs with the largest audiences start with the largest pool of possible voters.
Second, the rules permit campaigns. A big audience plus a team that organises it is allowed to count.
Third, the same few DJs are visible all year. Residencies, festival headline slots and ranked appearances in DJ Mag's own pages keep them in front of the people who vote. DJ Mag's analysis says an Ibiza residency lifts a ranking, which is that mechanism in the magazine's own words.
This is my reading, not a finding. It fits the table, the rules and the criticisms, but nobody outside DJ Mag can test it, because the vote counts aren't published. What can be said without a guess is that the poll rewards being known to a very large number of people, and that the same five DJs have been known to the largest number for eleven years running.
The poll is also no ranking of the most-played DJs on recorded sets. In the Selector, the recorded sets on this site, Carl Cox has 28 sets, Charlotte de Witte and Nina Kraviz 11 each, and Solomun and Vintage Culture 8 each. Hardwell and Calvin Harris have none, and Garrix and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike have one each. That is a count of what has been filmed or recorded and put online, not a measure of who matters, but it shows the poll and the recorded-set world are looking at different people.
Listen.
Three more names from this piece, each as an official upload.
Nina Kraviz
Nina Kraviz has 11 sets in the Selector and was not in the 2025 top 21. Cercle filmed this 112-minute set at the Eiffel Tower in Paris in 2018.
Vintage Culture
Vintage Culture was in the top ten in 2023 and 2024 and 11th in 2025. This is Cercle's 109-minute film from the Museu do Amanhã in Rio de Janeiro, made in 2022.
Sara Landry
DJ Mag named Sara Landry its number one hard DJ in 2025. Beatport filmed this 63-minute set in Amsterdam that year.
